The World Heritage city of Segovia is deservedly labeled so, with an outstanding cathedral and Roman remains which include an old aqueduct. The city, which is 30 minutes north of Madrid by car, attracts a good number of visitors whose interests lie in Roman archeology and the cultural aspects of Spain. The Alcazar is set in the hills above Segovia and is regarded as one of the prime fortresses of Spain. On the outskirts of Segovia, there is good accommodation although many of the Segovia hotels are centrally located or near green areas such as Dehesa Park. While there are sights to view in the outskirts of the city, the real attraction is the highest point of the outstanding Roman aqueduct at Azoguejo Square. Built in either the 1st or 2nd century, this masterpiece of engineering brings water from the Fuentes Fria River, 17kms away, and features 167 arches in a double decked formation. Visitors can trace the aqueduct's journey.
