Introduction to Santiago Compost. - Airport
Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia in Spain. Throughout history, the cathedral in the city has been the destination of the 9th century medieval pilgrimage route known as the Way of St James. The city's Old Town became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. Santiago de Compostela Airport serves the town as well as the national rail service. The airport is Galicia's most important international air facility and is located in the town of Lavacolla, on the outskirts of Santiago de Compostela. In 2010, just over two million passengers passed through the airport. There are many daily domestic flights which arrive at the airport as well as a number from further afield European destinations, with Ryanair being one of the main carriers. There are no on-site Santiago Compostela Airport hotels, with the nearest hotel being just over two kilometres away. The easiest way to get to the airport from the city is to take a taxi, which can be found outside the Arrivals hall.
