Introduction to Santander, Spain
The northern Spanish port city of Santander, located to the west of Spain’s Basque country, has long been a popular destination for Spanish tourists and is also becoming popular with visitors from countries around the world. Santander hotels first became famous during the middle 19th century when this city became a popular spa destination for the Spanish royal family and other wealthy visitors. Many of the most recommended hotels in Santander are still located in the El Sardinero area near the beach and royal palace, and still offer spa treatments. There are also several lower budget Santander hotels and pensiones. Most of the latter can be found in the centre of town and many also feature restaurants or home cooked meals. Two registered campsites are located near the beach and the lighthouse, and feature restaurants, supermarkets, bars, and other facilities. Posadas, which are rural country homes converted to guest houses and hotels, have also become quite popular, but should not be confused with Portuguese posadas, which are state run and quite expensive.
