- Salamanca Super Savers
The Spanish province of Salamanca is located in the western part of the country not far from the border with Portugal. Almost half of the province’s population lives in its capital city also named Salamanca and considered one of Europe’s most exquisite Renaissance cities. Salamanca’s sandstone buildings appear to give off a golden glow which has earned the city its nickname of ‘the golden city. Hotels in Salamanca are also easy to find, and many are modern luxury accommodations, at least one of which is a golf and spa hotel affiliated with the nearby Villa Mayor golf course. Budget Salamanca hotels and guest houses are no less plentiful thanks to the University of Salamanca, one of Europe’s oldest, and the city’s popularity with students as a place to learn Spanish. Among Salamanca hotels, the one designated as a parador overlooking Salamanca’s old city, itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is especially recommended. The other parador in the province is located in Ciudad Rodrigo, home to a stunning Roman Catholic cathedral and settled since the Neolithic Age.
