Introduction to Pyrenees-Aragon - Canfranc
One of Europe's greatest engineering feats is the international train line at Canfranc, which once tunneled under the Pyrenees, connecting northern Spain with France. Although the Pau to Canfranc line has been closed for many years now, the village itself remains a popular destination for mountain lovers and train buffs. The King of Aragon established the village in the 11th century as a trading post and strategic gateway into Somport Pass over the Pyrenees. A few traces of the village's antiquity remain in the form of Roman bridges and Medieval churches. A fire in 1617 razed the entire village, with its population numbers having never recovered. Fans of classic train journeys will enjoy the scenic ride to Canfranc Estacion, with its spectacular station tucked into the mountains. The village serves as a base for the nearby ski resorts of Candanchu and Astun. A handful of Canfranc hotels are scattered around the village. They mainly cater to tourists who come to enjoy the myriad outdoor recreation of the Pyrenees.
