Introduction to Pyrenees-Aragon - Canfranc Estacion
Few Spanish train journeys offer the mix of scenery provided along the route to Canfranc Estacion, a tiny village tucked away in the Aragon Valley, in northeastern Spain. There's little going in this hamlet of 400 residents so visitors need to come prepared for self-sufficiency. Although the original village has remnants of 12th century churches and a Romanesque bridge, it was the opening of the train line across the Pyrenees in the early 1900s that put Canfranc Estacion on the map. The enormous stately train station is the main attraction here, a destination in itself for rail buffs who enjoy the journey as much as the destination. There are a couple of Canfranc Estacion hotels in the village for those who want to stay overnight and enjoy the tranquility and inspiring mountain views. The station provides access to two nearby ski resorts, Astun and Candanchu, as well as a host of hiking trails and fishing along the river that runs along the edge of town.
