Introduction to Palencia - Ampudia
Lying close to the city of Valladolid in the northwest of Spain, Ampudia in Palencia is home to a wealth of historic monuments that remain little-discovered by overseas visitors. The most striking monument in the town, visible in all directions, is Colegiata Tower with its Gothic detail; walk to the top for great views of the town and surrounding area. The historical highlight here is surely the Castle of Ampudia, a beautifully preserved medieval fortification with turrets galore dating back to the late 15th century. The Sacred Art Museum is a plain-looking building from the outside, but inside it comes to life with beautiful old paintings, wonderfully decorated walls and frescoes, as well as beautiful brickwork. Some of the pieces here have been sources from as far back as the 12th century. There are only a small number of Ampudia hotels, a few of which are housed in grand old buildings befitting of this historic, yet undiscovered, town.
