The province of Ourense is located in the north-western corner of Spain north of the Portuguese border. Mountains surround this area on all sides, isolating it from the rest of Spain for centuries, and until recently, trains were the only means of transportation to enter or leave Ourense. The province’s capital city, also named Ourense, is also the site of most modern four star high rise Ourense hotels. Lower budget options for hotels in Ourense can also be easily found in the city, but the most unique Ourense hotels are located in the province’s smaller and more picturesque towns. Just 30kmS outside of the city of Ourense is the hillside town of Leiro, home to a 12th century monastery converted into a hotel and a picturesque guest house. Another hotel inside a former medieval monastery is located in the municipality of Nogueira de Ramuin, while a picturesque guest house can be found in the town of Verin. Both of these Ourense hotels have been designated paradors, or Spanish national monuments.
