Mundaka is located in the heart of Basque country, in northern Spain. The town juts into the Atlantic Ocean and is a popular coastal resort in the province of Biscay. The town is famous for its surf, with high waves - considered to be among the best surfs in Europe - rolling in from the Bay of Biscay. The town attracts surfers from all over the world and in the past has hosted the World Championship Tour of Surfing. The main landmark in the town, besides the port, is St Mary's Church. Built in the Renaissance style, the church dates back to the 11th century. There are two viewing areas visitors should seek out: Atalaya and Portuondo. Both provide breathtaking views of the ocean, the estuary and the mountains. The Summer Solstice festival in June attracts visitors from all over Spain, as a huge bonfire is lit in the town.
