Introduction to Merida, Spain
Home to some of Europe’s best preserved Roman ruins and some of Spain’s finest tapas, the ancient city of Merida in western Spain is a highly recommended stop on the road between Madrid and Lisbon, Portugal. Visitors to this fascinating city have no shortage of hotels in Merida to choose from. One Merida five star hotel is even located inside two of the city’s most significant buildings, the Pacheco’s Palace where Spanish royalty once stayed and the Mendoza’s Palace, which is built on the foundation of an ancient Roman building. Another Merida hotel has been designated a parador, one of many Spanish national monuments which have been turned into hotels. Other hotels in Merida are more modern, but still boast excellent amenities. The cheapest of all Merida hotels is the local budget hostel where the owners are friendly and the rooms are basic, but clean. Most hotels in Merida are within walking distance of the city’s National Museum of Roman Art, ancient aqueducts, Roman theatre, temples to Mars and Diana, and other historic attractions.
