Introduction to Menorca - Es Mercadal
The island of Menorca is one of the beautiful Balearic Islands in Spain. It is a more peaceful island than better-known Majorca and Ibiza, so is ideal for a relaxing break. Es Mercadal is a village in the centre of the island which is packed with pleasant coastal bay areas. Finding Menorca hotels in this area allows visitors to take a trip to the nearby Mount Toro, the highest point on the island. Up there you will find a tranquil sanctuary which was built as a spiritual retreat in the late 16th century by a group of Franciscan nuns. There is a church to explore here as well as a statue of Jesus which is dedicated to the men who died in 1925 in the Moroccan war. Due to its position, there are obviously fabulous views of the island to be enjoyed from here. This thriving town is also famous for cheese production and the manufacturing of traditional Menorcan sandals.
