Introduction to Mallorca - Santanyi
Majorca, in the Spanish Balearic Islands, is one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations. One of its municipalities, located in the south of the island, is Santanyi. Santanyi encompasses a number of beaches which have been made popular by their scenic beauty. There are 35kms of coastline covered by the municipality, which incorporates 172 archaeological sites, with evidence of a farming tradition and productive agriculture dating back to pretalayotic and talayotic periods. Santanyi is also home to Mondrago Natural Park, a protected natural area. The town was mostly built from sandstone and was formerly fortified, with the centre still hosting early remains in the form of its old town gates and walls. The 18th century Sant Andreu church dominates the town and the pretty fishing harbour of Cala Figuera lies on the coast.
