Introduction to Mallorca - Alaro
Known for its charm and long history, Alaro is a small town on Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands off the eastern coast of Spain. This north-central town has been inhabited since the 13th century, when it played an important role during the Islamic reconquest of the island. Surrounded by the mountainous foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana, the range that occupies the northwestern coast, the town is protected by the beautiful Castillo de Alaro. From Alaro hotels, reaching the castle requires a steep drive up a narrow mountain road followed by a half hour's hike on a winding trail. The restaurant at the end of the road serves gourmet Majorcan meals of sobrasada and ensaimada, made with the island's signature olive oil. Life in Alaro is typical of Spanish villages, with a weekly market that circles through the region and sets up its stalls along the main street every Saturday. Each end of the island can be reached within an hour's drive, making it easy to explore the capital of Palma or the S'Albufera Natural Park in an afternoon.Visit our Mallorca Travel Guide
