Introduction to Malaga - Carratraca
The southern mountains of Spain contain some of the most charming whitewashed villages in the country. Just north of Malaga, the hills are dotted with timeless hamlets like Carratraca, which are connected by rural roads that are just perfect for a multi-day road trip. Known for its sulphur water spas, Carratraca has been luring travellers to its cool climes since the Roman era. Its most famous spa, Thermas de Carratraca, is still operating and open to the public throughout the summer for hot water treatments. The classic town square is home to a mix of cafes, bars and local shops, with streets winding off in all directions. The community, like most villages in Andalucia, features buildings that are all whitewashed long with a distinct touch of Moorish influence. Carratraca hotels make a great base for excursions around the area to other villages like Alora and Ronda as well as natural attractions such as El Torcal Nature Preserve and the Ardales Lakes. While buses pass through this town, a car will open up the countryside much better.
