The town sits on the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas Mountains, at the opening of Guadalhorce Valley. The Moorish streets and traditional houses in the centre way to more modern villas on the outskirts, nestled amongst citrus and olive groves that have occupied the land for centuries. It is filled with archaeological remains reflecting the town's colourful history that can be traced back to its Phoenician beginnings. Roman, early Christian and Moorish ruins can be found in the Estacion de la Alqueria area of town. Hikes up the mountainside offer breathtaking scenery from greater heights, and canoeing and swimming are popular pastimes on the Guadalhorce River.
