Introduction to Madrid - Puerta de Sol
The literal heart of Spain’s capital is Puerta de Sol, a large public square that serves as the hub of transportation for Madrid. All of the city’s radial streets begin here, so the foot-based exploration possibilities are endless. If there’s a major protest happening, it happens in Puerta de Sol. But on any average day the square is awash in people milling around and on the move. The iconic Clock Tower is the most memorable of the historic buildings that ring the square, particularly on New Year’s Eve when much of the capital ventures here to hear the bells chime 12 times. There are dozens of Puerta de Sol hotels packed into the narrow streets that branch off the square, from cheap pensions to luxurious mid-rises. This is a good place for visitors to the city to base themselves as many of the more interesting attractions are just minutes awa, such as the Plaza Mayor and the Palacio Real. The museum district lies just to the east and the busy Atocha Station is to the south. Visit our Madrid Travel Guide
