Introduction to Madrid - Outskirts
Madrid, the capital of Spain, can truly be considered as a ‘city that never sleeps’. Famous for its grand plazas, homely tapas bars and outstanding works of art, it is on the must-see list of many European travellers. Most visitors base themselves in the city centre, which offers a decent enough taste of life as a Madrileno. However, those that stay in Madrid hotels on the outskirts can really find out what makes this great city tick. Staying in the outer suburbs offers guests the chance to visit some of the city’s hidden gems, such as the Royal Palace of El Pardo. This former royal residence is located in a mountainside village around 20kms north of the city centre. To get here, travellers must go past the university district, which is in fact an interesting place to stop. There are numerous busy, cheap bars and restaurants here. Other noteworthy landmarks in the northern suburbs include the Bernabeu Stadium, home of one the world’s best known football teams, Real Madrid. The main airport, Barajas, is also north of the city centre and around 45 minutes away from the centre by train.Visit our Madrid Travel Guide
