Introduction to Madrid - Gran Via
Calle Gran Via, featuring ornate period architecture, is one of the busiest streets in central Madrid. Due to its one-time profusion of theatres, it has been nicknamed the Spanish Broadway. The street is lined with upmarket shops and department stores, and has an excellent choice of Gran Via hotels on it and in the streets leading off it. A number of Madrid’s chic cafes and bars can also be found on the street. The street stretches right across the city centre and links the Plaza de Espana gardens to Cibeles Plaza. Plaza de Espana contains majestic monuments and statues, and is a quick walk from the Royal Palace. Cibeles is home to two iconic Madrid sights, Cibeles Palace and Cibeles Fountains. The Telecommunications Museum is on Gran Via. The Naval Museum and the famed Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum are just south of Cibeles Plaza. The Thyssen-Bornemisza houses a collection of 1,000 paintings dating from the 13th century onwards, with luminaries including El Greco represented. Visit our Madrid Travel Guide
