Introduction to Madrid - City Centre
The Spanish capital city of Madrid is on the River Manzanares, in the exact centre of the country. The city centre is to the right of the river and centred around a picturesque plaza called the Puerta del Sol. The nation’s symbol is a bear statue and it is sited in the plaza. The pedestrian-only street of Calle del Carmen runs north out of the square and is lined with boutiques and department stores including El Corte Ingles. Several of the most famous tourist sites in Spain are within a few hundred metres of the plaza. The former royal palace, the legendary Prado Museum and El Retiro Park are easily walked to. Works by masters such as El Greco and Titian are housed in the Prado and have contributed to its reputation as one of finest art collections in the world. On a summer’s day, El Retiro is an atmospheric place with a boating lake and the Crystal Palace among its draws. In the streets leading out of Puerta del Sol, there is an eclectic selection of Madrid city centre hotels. Visit our Madrid Travel Guide
