Introduction to Madrid - Alcala De Henares
The historic centre of the Spanish city of Alcara de Henares is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site and one of Spain’s earliest bishoprics. Set just 35kms to the northeast of the world city of Madrid, its picturesque city centre has a plethora of medieval heritage buildings set in narrow, cobbled streets surrounding famous Cervantes Square. The entire historic district has been beautifully preserved and is home to a large population of white storks, protected by a city ordinance. These birds build their nests on the roofs and chimneys of the ancient buildings as they have for centuries. Originally migratory birds, around 90 pairs now stay in the city most of the year. Inhabited since Roman times and later an Ottoman citadel, the city draws many tourists to its landmarks and architectural delights. Christopher Columbus stayed here for a time while negotiating funds for the financing of his discovery of America and famous Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes was born here.
