Introduction to Madrid - Airport
Spain’s busiest and largest air hub is Madrid Airport, set some nine kilometres from the commercial centre of the city and dealing with over 50 million passengers every year. Known as Madrid-Barajas Airport, it’s now one of Europe’s premier aviation hubs, with its regular Barcelona shuttle the most used route on the continent until the high-speed rail line between the two cities was opened in 2008. Spanish flag-carrier Iberia accounts for more than 60 per cent of aircraft movements here. The complex’s four terminals are divided between international, domestic, Sky Team and Star Alliance flights, with Terminal 4 dedicated to Iberia’s routes. All the usual passenger amenities are provided, with the airport recently winning major awards. Ground transportation options include the Madrid Metro, an overland rail line, regular express city bus services, taxis, car hire and hotel shuttles. For overnighting or late arrivals, Madrid Airport hotels are situated just outside or relatively close to the airport, although there are none on site.Visit our Madrid Travel Guide
