Introduction to Logrono - Alfaro
The community of Alfaro stands in the middle of northern Spain, near the city of Logrono in the La Rioja region. The town's name comes from an Arabic word meaning 'watchman' or 'lighthouse,' and most Alfaro hotels are modest one or two star accommodations. The ancient Ninfeo Romano water system from the Roman Empire still stands in the town centre, not far from the Eras de San Martin archaeological site. It took over a hundred years to construct the church of San Miguel Collegiate between the 16th and 17th centuries, but the decorative screens called reredoses on the back of the church's altar are just as impressive as its exterior. However, the church is also famous as the world's biggest stork nesting location, and over 400 of these birds choose to build their nests on the church roof. The city council, municipal archives and library can all be found inside the 18th century Abbey Palace. The main gate of another historic palace, Saenz de Heredia, contains 12 large balconies and 23 beautiful windows.
