Introduction to Lleida - Alfes
Alfes in the Spanish province of Lleida is a convenient base for visitors to Catalonia. This compact municipality of just over 300 people has a history dating back to prehistoric times, offering rock paintings thousands of years old. These paintings and the shelters within which they are found are today protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is well worth a daytrip from Barcelona, 175kms to the east or a two-hour drive away. Visitors to the Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula site can overnight in Alfes hotels. Aside from these ancient paintings, there is not a lot in the way of tourist attractions in the municipality. Those visitors with time on their hands may like to stop at Sant Pere parish church, reconstructed in the 1980s after sustaining considerable damage during the Spanish Civil War. Vileta is the old medieval district and a wonderful place to stroll through. The community's annual festival is held in August.
