Introduction to Leon - Cain
With the sublime Picos de Europa looming all around, the Spanish hamlet of Cain serves as an ideal base for exploring the bounty of natural wonder and outdoor adventure in these mountains. The tiny village sits literally smack in the heart of this massive national park and can only be reached by a single road that snakes its ways through the canyons and chasms of the Picos. Leon, the main city in the area, serves as a good transport hub for catching a bus or driving through the mountains to Cain. The village is one of two entry points to the 12km Cares Gorge trail, which is the most popular walking path in the park. Cain itself is little more than an outpost, with a handful of refuges, Cain hotels and cafes. The national park is a major attraction for long-distance trekkers and mountaineers, many of whom stopover in this village to rest up and enjoy a hot meal and some company.
