Introduction to Lekeitio, Spain

Lekeitio is a small town of under 8,000 inhabitants located in the northern Spanish province of Biscay, in the Basque Country region. It is one of the Basque coast's most important fishing ports and popular among tourists during the summer months. Lekeitio lies at the mouth of the Lea River and its two beautiful beaches look out towards the stunning island of San Nicolas, reachable on foot during low tide. The town is full of popular houses complete with a strong seafaring flavour, a sign of its fishing village origins. Standing beside these fine examples of Basque architecture are Gothic masterpieces like the Church of Santa Maria de la Asuncion. This is one of the Biscay area's most important Gothic buildings due to its buttresses, flying buttresses and exterior elements as well as its attractive Flemish reredos, or decorative screen behind the altar, inside. There is plenty of choice when it comes to Lekeitio hotels and like any popular tourist destination, there is a fine selection of restaurants, particularly those which serve up seafood.
