Introduction to Huesca - Bierge
The tiny Spanish municipality of Bierge lies in Huesca Province, 100kms from Zaragoza, in the autonomous community of Aragon. Set in hilly country at the foot of the Pyrenees ranges, at 600m above sea level, it's composed of 10 miniscule settlements with a total population of 258. The largest village is Morrano, home to just 46 inhabitants. Remote and set in spectacular countryside, the community is an ideal destination for visitors seeking out interesting heritage buildings. Such visitors will appreciate: the Medieval Moranno Parish Church of St Peters, Romanesque in style; the 18th century Village Hall and the ancient hermitage of St Martin. A handful of Bierge hotels are set within the Sierra de Guara National Park, a haven for eco-tourists and outdoor activity lovers, including bikers, hikers, rock-climbers and walkers. In winter, the region opens up to skiers and winter sports enthusiasts, with several small resorts scattered around the hills. The national park is famed for its rare orchids, karst scenery, gorges and birdlife, including eagles.
