Introduction to Granada - Loja
The province of Granada is one of the must-see areas of southern Spain, and one which is a huge draw for tourists year round. The old towns and the unique Moorish Arab culture of the region are summed up by the fact that the city of Grenada is a UNESCO World Heritage site. To the far west of the province is the town of Loja, where there is also the strong influence of the Moors in the Alcazaba, as seen in the ancient Arabic fortress walls. Such is the history of this region that the town was taken by the Christians in 1486. The mountainous Sierra de Loja provide the backdrop to the town and there are a good number of hotels in Loja which offer views across to the surrounding peaks. There are also plenty of religious monuments built in the 16th century and these include the Inglesia de Incarnation, the Convent of Santa Clara and the Inglesia de San Gabriel. The town is easily reached on the A-92, between Malaga and Granada.Visit our Granada Travel Guide
