Introduction to Granada - Capileira
Of the three charming villages set in the Poqueira River Gorge in Granada's La Alpujarra district, Capileira is the most northerly and highest, at 1,436m above sea level. The village's oldest part lies at the lowest level, with tourist developments taking place farther up the slopes of the gorge. From the village, there are no roads that transverse the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, with Capileira being as far as visitors can drive. Just above the village are the outer edges of the Sierra Nevada National Park. Tourism is important to the village and focuses on mountaineering, walking and other outdoor activities. Capileira hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars provide good visitor facilities, with a weekly market on Tuesdays. The old part of the village is being carefully preserved and makes for a great base for visitors to the nearby national park.
