Introduction to Gran Canaria - Agaete
Off the coast of Morocco and the Western Sahara, Gran Canaria is the third largest island of the Canary Islands, offering tourists one of Spain's largest cities and a variety of cultural and leisure opportunities. Agaete is a town on the oldest part of this more than 14 million-year-old island, and is found on the northwest coast. In the past, many visitors came here to see El Dedo de Dios, a natural monument set just off the coast and partially destroyed in 2005 during a tropical storm. Though the top of 'God's finger' has fallen, this important rocky monument is still a major tourist site, having inspired artists for centuries with its supernatural shape. Many travellers who arrive by ship will step first into this city, from either the port of La Luz or the port of Las Nieves. Agaete hotels are just north of the beautiful Tamadaba Natural Park and only a half hour's drive from the island's capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The island is covered in beach resorts offering every available water sport and great nightlife.
