Introduction to Gomera - San Sebastian
What is often said about San Sebastian La Gomera in the Canary Islands is that the volcanic peak of Teide in Tenerife is always in view - it is that close. The island is relatively small, with direct ferry connections to its larger neighbour, but it offers a quieter alternative. The majority of the land is given over to farming, with the tourist business bringing a reasonable amount of business to La Gomera. San Sebastian, located on the east coast, is the only town of any size here. It is also the capital of the island, which has less than 10,000 inhabitants. Christopher Columbus stopped by in 1492, and there is a museum here dedicated to the exploring mariner at Casa de Colon. Other local attractions of the island are the old harbour and the national park. San Sebastian hotels are all in the vicinity of the busy port, with standard and simple rooms both available. Out of town, the road network gives access to the coastal towns of Playa de Santiago and the small airport.
