Introduction to Girona - Caldes de Malavella
A stroll though history awaits visitors arriving in the Girona Province town of Caldes de Malavella, set in the centre of the Costa Brava and formerly famous as a thermal water spa. In and around the little town are Roman ruins, Medieval buildings and even Modernist structures from the late 19th century, once built as resorts facilitating treatments using the healing waters. Hydrotherapy sessions can still be had here and are great after an extended on-foot exploration of the surrounding countryside. The original Roman Baths here are in well-preserved condition, with the central pool surrounded by treatment rooms. Remnants of the old city walls can still be seen at the edges of the Medieval part of town, close to several Caldes de Malavella hotels and other attractions. The original spring bringing the life-giving and healing hot water to the town terminates in an ancient basin and spout in the main square. The lovely Modernist accommodations for the 19th century visitors are set either side of an avenue of tall trees, giving relaxing, shaded walks.
