Introduction to Girona - Besalu
Set inland from the Mediterranean coast, in the Spanish province of Catalonia, the medieval town of Besalu is listed in its entirety as a Historic National Property. Its stunning buildings, the most spectacular being the 12th century Romanesque bridge, set high over the River Fluvia and boasting a towered gateway at its mid-point, are the major draw. Another famous landmark is the Church of Sant Pere, consecrated in 1003 AD. Picturesque, arcaded squares and streets, an 11th century Jewish mikvah (ritual bath) and a ruined Medieval synagogue tell of the long history of this fascinating hill town. Besalu hotels are as likely to be housed in converted heritage buildings as not, with an increasing number of visitors arriving to explore and enjoy the glorious scenery and ancient buildings. Many of Catalonia's most important monasteries were located in the town, as it was never a diocese approved by the Pope. The Monestir de Sant Pere, the Hospital de Sant Julia and the main square, Placa de la Llibertat, all give a journey back in time to when the town was a hub of religious and commercial activity.
