Introduction to Girona - Begur
The Spanish province of Catalonia is home to the coastal town of Begur, set on the Mediterranean Sea, 80kms from the French border and 60kms from Girona's international airport. The centre of the town and Begur hotels are just five minutes' drive from beautiful Sa Tuna, Sa Reira, Aiguafreda and Aiguasblava beaches, which are well-known for their water sports opportunities. This region of the Costa Brava is more of a getaway for residents in Barcelona and Girona than a frantic foreign tourist mecca, with international visitors who make it here enjoying the chance to holiday like the Spanish. Golfers are regular visitors, with nine great courses close by the town, and the local, protected marine park gives some of the best diving anywhere along the Spanish coastline. Horseback riding and hiking are also favourites, and the Pyrenees winter ski resorts are just two hours away by car. The old town is set high on a hill, with its pretty cobbled streets home to heritage homes and small shops, all sympathetically preserved or restored.
