Albons, a small town in the Spanish region of Girona, is home to some impressive historic buildings.

The scenic town sits atop a hill, both to protect it from periodic flooding and as a defensive gesture.

Little of the old castle remains, but some of the fortifications can be viewed from hotels in Albons.

Walking tours are the best way to experience this charismatic town, whose inclined streets run between stone buildings, many of which date to the 12th and 13th centuries.

The building known today as the castle is interesting and still contains some original elements, but offers little of the substance of the old fortress.

There is a nice old church, St Cugat's, which dates from the late-13th century.

This Romanesque building still contains a baptismal formed from a single limestone block.

The chapel of St Grau has been restored and offers excellent views from its position amongst pine trees.
