With a history stretching back to Roman times, Gijon has much to keep visitors intrigued aside from its beaches and marina. This Spanish port city has a surprisingly good choice of museums, from the International Bagpipe Museum to the Revillagigedo Palace and Museum, the latter occupying a 17th century fortified palace. Other city museums in the interesting old town cover exhibits ranging from art to the railroad industry. Cultural tours are popular in Gijon, taking visitors to Campa de Torres Archaeological Site, where a number of Roman remains have been restored, including a thermal bath complex. The main beach of San Lorenzo sits to the east, with Poniente Beach, a thalassic centre and an aquarium to the west. Off the coast, just about any water sport you can think of can be practiced, from boating to diving. The busiest time of year for Gijon hotels is the summer, when clear and bright days are virtually guaranteed.
