Gautegiz Arteaga is located on the northwestern coast of Spain, in Basque country, close to the French border.

The town is located almost equidistant to the two cities of Santander and San Sebastian, and is situated at the mouth of the River Urdaibai.

The town is famous for its imposing medieval fortress, Arteaga Tower, which was built by Empress Eugenia de Montijo.

The second landmark of the town is the Church of Santa Maria, which dates back to the 12th century.
