Gautegiz Arteaga is located on the northwestern coast of Spain, in Basque country, close to the French border. The town is located almost equidistant to the two cities of Santander and San Sebastian, and is situated at the mouth of the River Urdaibai. The town is famous for its imposing medieval fortress, Arteaga Tower, which was built by Empress Eugenia de Montijo. It is still stunning today. The second landmark of the town is the Church of Santa Maria, which dates back to the 12th century. A daytrip up Atxarre Mountain, where visitors will find the Hermitage of San Pedro de Atxarre, is a must. The views from the hermitage over the Atlantic Ocean are simply breathtaking. Gautegiz Arteaga hotels are few and far between, and can quickly fill up during the peak summer months. Most are dotted around the outskirts of the town. The beaches here are also well worth visiting and attract visitors from all over Spain.
