Introduction to El Hierro - Beach
The Spanish island of El Hierro is the farthest southwestern point in the Canary Island archipelago, set off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. It's also the smallest of any island in the chain and is of roughly triangular shape, with a massive natural bay forming one of its sides. It's mountainous, volcanic and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with 60 per cent of its area protected as a result. The little town of La Restinga is the place for scuba diving activities, with no less than nine dive centres ferrying divers to and from the choicest spots, and a few small El Hierro Beach hotels taking care of visitors' creature comforts. The beaches here are perfect for a stress-busting week or so; quiet, with fine sand swept by warm, clear waters. Exploring the protected areas of the island is heaven for eco-tourists and birders. Horseback riding, paragliding and hiking are also available.
