Where the Serra del Montsia Mountains rise up behind the sea, the sunny resort town of Alcanar, in Costa Daurada, provides a safe haven from the trials of everyday life. This is the most southern coastal town in Catalonia, a mix of traditional fishing villages and agriculture. Spanish second homes and holidaymakers from Barcelona have largely moved in, with Alcanar Beach the main strip of sand in the area surrounded by homes and condos. Many travellers, however, prefer the quieter climes of the fishing villages at Les Cases d'Alcanar and Platja, just outside the region's main town. Alcanar hotels range from village pensions to self-service apartments, usually within walking distance of the sea. The town's Renaissance parish church adds a bit of ambiance to the whitewashed backdrop of the buildings. Defense towers built in the 1500s dot the coast north and south of town, adding more places to visit if lounging on the beach gets monotonous.
