Introduction to Costa Brava - Castello d’Empuries
The picturesque medieval town of Castello d'Empuries is set on the estuary of the Muga River, just four kilometres from the charmingly-named Gulf of Roses. Surrounded by vineyards and protected areas, and with pretty beaches nearby, the town began in the 11th century and quickly became an important trading hub. Seven monasteries, fine medieval churches, a cathedral and meandering cobbled streets make this destination a favourite with history buffs. Nearby is the modern tourist resort and massive marina of Empuriabrava, built close to an ancient Greco-Roman acropolis. Many Castello d'Empuries hotels are set in sympathetically-converted historic mansions in the heart of the old quarter, giving the visitor a glimpse into the rich heritage of this unique town. Places to explore include the Sant Dominic Monastery, the Santa Clara Convent, the Silk Museum and the winding alleyways.
