Thermal baths and a peaceful beachside ambiance attracted the wealthy Barcelona bourgeoisie to Caldes d'Estrach between 1875 and the 1920s. Set on the Maresme coast between Arenys de Mar and Sant Vicenc de Montalt, the resort is just 35 minutes away from fabulous Barcelona by train. The beaches, crowded now with visitors from colder climes, have retained their charm, and the thermal springs still delight. Art buffs have an extra treat in store - the collection of famous expert on Catalan artists, Josep Palau, is on display here and includes works by Picasso, Dali and other artists from the region. South side beaches, easily accessible from beachside Caldes d'Estrach hotels, have gently sloping sands and a children's play area, while those on the north side are more rustic and include a nudist area. The boardwalk is great for walking, jogging or enjoying a glass of wine and sunset-watching.
