North from Grenada and the coast of the Costa del Sol is the province of Cordoba and its small town of Priego de Cordoba. The historic town displays all the Spanish charm of narrow streets and flower-clad whitewashed houses which make for great photographs. Priego de Cordoba exhibits the influence of the Moorish Arabs as well as the attentions of the Christians, who had two goes at taking it from the Moors. But with a natural barrier of a mountain rock face on one side, it was always a difficult place to conquer. The legacy of the Christian domination is well seen in the ornate façade of the Iglesia Monumental. There are some high quality hotels in Priego de Cordoba, which are in the four to five-star range although for the traveller on a lower budget, the town has smaller, less expensive places to stay.
