Introduction to Ciudad Real - Campo de Criptana
The iconic windmills of Campo de Criptana sit on the plains in and around this ancient, fortified castle town in La Mancha region. The town was first settled along the hill of Cerro la Paz in the early 14th century. Ten of the unique structures remain, with their original machinery intact, and form the main tourist draw of this historic town. The entire group is now a cultural heritage site, with one of the mills put into operation each Saturday. The little town's 16th century granary is another visitor favourite, underlining the importance of agriculture here in the Middle Ages and earlier. The streets encircling the castle hill form the old quarter, winding around the foot of the hill with its quaint white-painted cottage homes set close to one of the 10 hermitages in the area. The Albacin is the Moorish quarter, home during the 16th century and later to Muslim families fleeing Granada. It boasts Islamic tiled decorations and wrought iron window grilles. Campo de Criptana hotels are just a short walk from the heritage area. other spellings: campo de critana otel, campo decribtana hote, cambo de criptna, campo criptana hotle
