Introduction to Cantabria - Castro Urdiales
Set along the vast Atlantic Bay of Biscay in Spain's Cantabria Province, the municipality of Castro Urdiales is a modern town with a pretty, curving golden sand beach. Complementing this sandy stretch is an ancient castle and the breathtaking parish church of Santa Maria de la Asuncion, both of which date from the Middle Ages. Tourism is the community's economic mainstay, followed by fishing and the canning in oil of sardines and anchovies. Its scenic harbour is a favourite spot for holidaymakers from Spanish cities, many of whom have holiday homes in the area. Castro Urdiales hotels offer comfortable accommodation, with several set along the beach, with fine views of the ocean and the Castle of Santa Anna, set on the headland. Romans were the first to settle here and by the 12th century, the town was a busy trade port. Beautiful Santa Maria Church, now a national monument, was completed in the 15th century and holds famed sacred images of the Virgin Mary and the reclining Christ.
