Introduction to Cadiz - Chipiona
Set on the dramatic Atlantic coastline of Andalusia, in Cadiz Province, the ancient town of Chipiona is a popular summer tourist destination for its medieval charm and long history, beginning in the Roman era. Legend states the disciples of St Augustine landed here after fleeing the Vandal invasion of North Africa, bringing with them a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary. The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Regla has been a pilgrimage destination ever since. The town is rich in medieval architecture and boasts a citadel, an ancient monastery and much more. Chipiona hotels are buzzing every summer with visitors to its lovely iodine-rich beaches, a few of which are Blue Flag listed. Wine-making and fishing are still important economic factors here, and the town is a hub for religious and secular festivals, with Easter and Carnaval the most important, followed by the Pinar Pilgrimage. Close by is Costa Ballena, a dedicated tourism resort that is now in its second phase of construction.
