Introduction to Cadiz - Castelar de la Frontera
Set high on a rock, the small town of Castelar de la Frontera comprises three ancient villages and a magnificent castle set at its highest point. Castillo Viejo is the old quarter, known locally as El Castillo and recognised as a Spanish Historic Artistic Monument. New Castellar and Almoraima are the two other districts, formerly individual villages. The town, with its population of just over 3,000, lies 120kms from the major Spanish city of Cadiz. Originally a Roman settlement, the nearby Tower Lascutana is believed to have defended a vital Roman road running from Carteia to Cordoba, with the ancient heritage of the area drawing a good number of tourists to Castelar de la Frontera hotels. The grand castle itself dates from the 15th century and is just one of the medieval and later buildings in the area. The 16th century Monastery of San Miguel Celi was built to house the barefoot friars of the order of San Miguel and is set within the old walled town, close by the palace of the Counts of Castallar.
