Introduction to Bilbao - Airport
None of the airports in northern Spain's Basque country are more significant than Bilbao Airport, whose location in the community of Loiu is just 12kms from the city of Bilbao. Most Bilbao Airport hotels are just minutes away from the current airport terminal, which architect Santiago Calatrava designed and which opened in 2000. Departing flights leave the airport from the uppermost of the terminal's three floors, while arriving flights enter the airport from the second floor. The uppermost terminal floor also contains a bank, five ATMs and a departures hall with 36 check-in desks. A duty free shop, self service cafeteria with a grill counter, and several fashion boutiques can all be found at the departures lounge. In 2010, nearly 3.9 million passengers flew aboard more than 54,000 flights between the airport and dozens of destinations throughout Spain and the rest of Europe. Passengers may travel from the airport to the city by bus or by hiring vehicles from one of the airport's four car rental establishments.
