Introduction to Barcelona - Mataro
A claim to fame for this district of Barcelona is that Mataro had the first rail link, which was created in 1848, in Spain. Rail connections are still an important part of the city infrastructure, but there is also the port and the old Roman road as ways of getting to this coastal town. Mataro has a good long and wide sandy beach along with a tree-lined promenade to stroll along. It is a place where the city dwellers of Barcelona make the 20-minute journey and come here for a weekend of relaxation. Local attractions for the visitor are the Mataro Museum and the Roman villa at Torre Lauder. To cater for the influx of international tourists, there are plenty of hotels in Mataro, and they are located along the seafront and in the town centre. The district, which has a strong cultural heritage from the Romans to the Catalans, makes for a fascinating place to stay, and one which is easy for commuting to the main city sights of Barcelona.
