Introduction to Barcelona - Gothic Quarter
Barcelona is one of Spain’s largest and most historic cities. Sited on the northeast coast of the country, Barcelona has the Gothic Quarter at its heart of the ancient Ciutat Vella city centre area. It stretches inland from the Mediterranean promenade as far as the street known as Ronda de Sant Pere. The city port is on the south side and has ferry services from cities such as Eivisa and Genoa. The quarter is characterised by stately architecture, much of which dates from the Middle Ages. It is packed with a diverse selection of hostels, pensions and Gothic Quarter hotels. This central location offers abundant attractions. Santa Eulalia Cathedral is probably the most famous of these and features lofty towers, rooftop gargoyles and the Well of the Geese. Plaza Real is the main square in the quarter and a vibrant place, boasting superb eateries and nightclubs such as Jamboree. Portal de l'Angel Avenue is near the square and offers great retail outlets. In a lane leading off the avenue is the legendary Els Quatre Gats modernist cafe-bar. Visit our Barcelona Travel Guide
