Introduction to Barcelona - Cardona
Located in Spain's Catalonia region, around 90kms northwest of Barcelona, Cardona is a charming town with an interesting medieval history. The town's most significant features include its medieval castle with its walled fortress. The castle, set atop a hill, is a fine example of Catalan Romanesque architecture. The castle stands to the northeast of Cardona and offers superb views over the town and its river. The most impressive part of the castle is the 11th century collegiate church of San Vicente, which rises almost 20 metres at its central nave. The town's streets feature numerous Romanesque and Gothic structures, including a 9th century fortified enclosure which has been restored and is now used as a hotel. Cardona boasts other interesting places such as Placa del Mercat square, the pretty Calle Major street and Sant Miquel Church.
