Introduction to Barcelona - Canet de Mar
Canet de Mar is a picturesque little town located on Spain's Costa del Maresme, around 40kms northeast of Barcelona. It is a popular seaside destination, particularly during weekends, when city dwellers arrive to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday city life. There are roughly 11,000 permanent inhabitants. This much-visited tourist resort provides excellent facilities for visitors as well as one of the region's best beaches. One of the most popular attractions is the Placa Macia, in the town centre, which houses the ruins of a watchtower which used to warn of Barbary pirate attacks in the 15th and 16 centuries. Also worth visiting are the Santuaria de la Misericordia, among Catalonia's finest maritime temples, and the parochial church, which features a 42-metre high bell tower. Aside from tourism, Canet de Mar is renowned for growing strawberries and flowers.
